The Wichita Falls Area Food Bank (WFAFB) began In January 1982 as a largely volunteer operation that distributed surplus government commodities out of a borrowed warehouse. Spurred by rapid growth and generous support from the University Kiwanis Club in Wichita Falls, the WFAFB built and moved into the facility we currently occupy. A Food Recovery Center and large walk-in freezer were added in 2000.
Over the years our service area has grown from three to twelve counties in North Texas. In 2009 we distributed over 2.9 million pounds of food through partnerships with 125 nonprofit member agencies.
We began targeting childhood hunger in 2005 through Kids Cafe, an after-school feeding program. To date, 10 Kids Cafe sites now provide meals to hungry children.
PowerPak 4 Kids, which supplies backpacks of food to chronically hungry children each weekend, was added in the 2006-2007 academic year. By May 2009, the average number served through PowerPak 4 Kids had nearly doubled to 857 students.
In June 2009, we were chosen to be one of only two Texas cities participating in the Senior Farmers' Market Nutrition Program. This Texas Department of Agriculture-administered program provides qualifying seniors with fresh produce while simultaneously supporting area growers.
